They Suspect Nothing is a series of comedic VR minigames developed by Coatsink as a launch title exclusively for the new Oculus Go headset . It also features the voice acting talents of Jim Broadbent.

Since the game’s premise involved a human pretending to be robot, I thought I’d try using acoustic instruments in alternative ways to mimic sounds associated with electronic production. Flutter-tongued ocarina (which basically means rolling your r’s), bowed guitar, plucked piano and jaw harp were a few sounds in my palette designed to achieve this goal.

The result was a colourful, playful sound that drives the action while being loveably wonky like the world you inhabit.

In the minigame ‘Concogtions’, the player must perfectly mix a series of made to order drinks for a demanding robot taskmaster. Vocal gulps were the starting point for a bass synth-like effect which later became the track’s foundation. Other oddities include glass bottles, gargle singing and a bouncing bass breakdown made entirely from a rubber band.

The game was also the perfect opportunity to launch my (ahem…long postponed) rap career. I teamed up with singer Lucy Songi and beatbox tuba player Bob Payne to create the credits theme of the game, simply called ‘They Suspect Nothing’.
